[Potomac Blockade]. Confederate Soldier's Letter During the Potomac River Blockade. Four integral pages, 5.25" x 7.25", Camp Walker [Virginia], September 7, 1861. Camped on a hill near the Potomac River during the first months of war, he writes of the blockade to his parents, in part: "...we went up on a hill bear by, & took a good look at the Potomac which is in sight. Saw nothing but the P____c which was three miles off & Maryland on the opposite side. We saw one Boat or Tug, on her, what she was & after, we were unable to discern...We hear cannons firing every day here a little above & opposite us...We don't know what here what is going on...but as far as I am able to learn, we are trying to Blockade the P___ prevent them going from Washington down the P___...We are throwing up Batteries & fortifications as fast as we can...I hear...we had taken the Chain Bridge Just above Alexandria and 400 prisoners...I have heard two or three reports of cannon while writing this." Dampstaining along the right edge and flattened folds.

    More Information:

The Union blockade of the South is widely known, but it is not widely recognized that the Confederate States had their own little blockade going in the first years of the war. The purpose of the blockade was to disrupt the flow of traffic on the river bringing supplies to Washington. The blockade was finally broken by the Federals in the winter of 1862.
