The newspaper was established in 1840 by Lydia and Davis Child and was the official newspaper for the American Anti-Slavery Society. The Society had been founded in 1833 by William Lloyd Garrison and Arthur Tappan. Frederick Douglass would later become a vital member of this group. The newspaper was published weekly up until the ratification of the Fifteenth Amendment in 1870. This group represents the ante-bellum period, the Civil War period, and the years following the war, and provide an important historical source relating to the debate over slavery.
