    Description

[Mormons] Harriet and Henry I. Doremus Archive of Letters, 1856 - 1870. Six letters from Harriet to her husband Henry, and twelve letters from Henry to his Uncle and Aunt. Ranging in size from 4.75" x 7.75" to 7.75" x 12.25", most consist of two pages penned on recto and verso, all from Salt Lake City, written from 1856 through 1870. Medical student Henry I. Doremus was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) in 1843, in New York City. The following year, he married Harriet Fairbanks and the couple removed to Nauvoo, Illinois, then in 1847 to Salt Lake City, Utah. After several years toiling to build a home, a church community, a religious center, and a city, Doremus opened his own school in 1859. For the following twelve years, Doremus operated the Union Academy in Salt Lake City, which was, at the time, considered the finest school in the Territory. This interesting archive of personal letters reveals the fine line that Mormons of the time had to walk; theirs was a religion that was under regular attack and they took pains to avoid trouble at every opportunity. In Henry's March 23, 1858 letter to his aunt and uncle, he states: "The Book off Mormon is to [sic] sacred a book to be sent round... for every blackguard to sneer and scoff at. I don't wish you to suffer it. Read it & tell those who want to know, or are worthy to know what it contains." Lot also includes a clipped section of another letter and two transmittal envelopes. Letters are in generally outstanding condition.
