[Mormons]. 1866 Autograph Letter Describing Salt Lake City and the Mormons. Three integral pages, 7.75" x 9.75", Salt Lake City, Utah, June 2, 1866. John Franklin Godfrey writes his parents giving vivid descriptions of Salt Lake City and its inhabitants.

He writes in part: "When we meet again, I shall be able to give you some amusing accounts of my interviews with the Mormons. They are a very industrious people and represent almost all European nations and are very common people and the women are generally so ugly, that it would be impossible for them to get married elsewhere. There are some pretty ones however, and they look very much out of place among these savage ill dressed looking viragoes. I went to a Mormon meeting in Cache Valley and the preaching beat the "Harp of a Thousand Strings" all to pieces. I have been treated however very kindly by them and bear them no personal ill will. They think they have been very much abused and persecuted by the "Gentiles" as they call us, and they certainly have no reason to like us. They appear to be very contented with their religion and the women admire the system of polygamy as far as I can see, as much as the men. They call themselves saints, and in an after existence the "gentiles" are to be their servants. A curios looking set of saints they are. One uninitiated would take them for the devil."

The letter displays old fold creases, but is legible and in excellent condition.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
