[Mississippi]. Confederate Telegram Archive comprised of twenty-five handwritten telegrams spanning the dates April 1861 through October 1862. Each message is handwritten and appears on 5.5" x 8.5" South-Western Telegraph Company letterhead. The bulk of the messages deal with the acquisition of arms and ammunition early in the war. Of note is one telegram, dated October 8, addressed to Confederate Ordnance officer, Uncas Bourne, which asks: "Was the sixth Miss regt captured in battle of Corinth. [sic]" It should be noted that most of the documents are noted with "paid" or "charged" which was placed on the receiving end of the telegraph.

The various messages were sent from Capt. William L. Harper (1822-1892), Mississippi Jefferson Light Artillery; Gen. Martin Luther Smith, one of the few northern-born Confederate generals (he was a native of New York); Gen. Charles G. Dahlgren (1811-1888), the younger brother of Adm. John Dahlgren, the inventor of the Dahlgren gun (which is mentioned in a telegram from Vicksburg, dated May 11, 1862, in full: "Please send carriage chassis & ammunition for one nine inch Dahlgren Gun twenty Seven Inches between Rim Basis."); John J. Pettus (1813-1867), the governor of Mississippi from 1859 until 1863; Gen. Charles Clark (1811-1877), who replaced Pettus as governor in 1863 and served through the end of the war; Gen. Earl Van Dorn (1820-1863); Gen. Gideon J. Pillow; et al.

Some of the pieces show the expected folds, age toning, and chipping of the edges, but are in great condition nonetheless. Several pieces have one small hole through the center from being placed on a spindle.
