[Mickey Spillane]. Spillane Docudrama 16mm Film Reel. Circa 1970. Mickey Spillane, dressed as Mike Hammer, walks around New York City and takes the viewer to the real Blue Ribbon Bar where Mike Hammer hung out. He talks about his career dressed as Mike Hammer, complete with fedora, trench-coat, gun and holster. He sings the praises of New York, having been born and raised in Brooklyn and he speaks of using actors and crew members from the East Coast after the Mike Hammer film "turkeys" that were produced by Hollywood. "They stunk!" Spillane declares in the documentary, although he admits to being quite pleased with the audience turn out.

The footage also shows his office, the beach and his house. Spillane talks about his books and his character, Mike Hammer, and about his personal life. His typist, Maxine, describes his process as "waiting until the last minute to type the book," even though he has the ending in his head already. The beginning just comes along with it as he types it out.

Friend and writer David J. Garrity, who was used as a character in one of Spillane's books, laughs at Spillane's spoken self-assuredness, sharing with the interviewer that the creator of Mike Hammer was in actuality a bit nervous. He then compliments, "I don't think Mickey Spillane will ever retire as a writer... if everything went down the tubes, he'd be back at the typewriter!"

Next are scenes in South Carolina, at his original house there, where he is shown cooking Thanksgiving dinner.

"I can't think of any common interests we have other than we like each other," Spillane says of second wife, Sherri Manilou. Manilou and Spillane are featured together, he taking photographs of her, and the two also discussing the scandalous cover of Spillane's book The Erection Set, for which Manilou posed nude. She also rehearses songs and jokes for an upcoming show she has, gently teasing that she was married to a "sexy senior citizen, which is a very nice way of saying 'dirty old man.'" (The two would later divorce, and Spillane would marry his third wife Jane Rogers Johnson in 1983.)

"I've always liked this type of character," Spillane says of Mike Hammer in a voiceover. "Even when I do one shot stories, it's always the same type of character... I can't get away from this particular type of hero image."

On success, Spillane finishes the docudrama with this quote: "A writer has a distinct advantage over everybody else. All he needs is a typewriter, three dollars worth of paper, and a mailbox--and he's in business!"

Diameter of reel measures approximately 10.5 inches. Film reel in metal canister. One hour in length, this is the only film copy, but the lot comes with a DVD transfer of the footage. Very good. From the estate of Mickey Spillane.
