    Description

[Mexican War]. Weekly Union. [Washington]: Ritchie & Heiss, 1846. Large 8vo, 461 pages (545-832 and 18-192). Bookplate of Henry D. Gilpin (1801-1860), 14th U.S. attorney general, on the front pastedown. Comprised of all issues beginning with Volume I, number 35, through Volume II, number 12, with the exception of Volume II, issue number 1, spanning the months January through June 1846. Contains news from Texas at the beginning of the Mexican War including some of the early battles, some Mormon related news, etc. Half-bound in marbled paper and brown leather over boards. Heavily shelfworn; bumped corners. The spine covering is entirely gone exposing the textblock and both the front and rear covers are detached. The final two pages (191 and 192) are also detached. Minor damage to the pages with scattered foxing throughout.

The Weekly Union was a decidedly pro-Polk, pro-Mexican War newspaper jointly operated by editor Thomas Ritchie (1778-1854), a pro-Southern journalist and editor who favored annexation of Texas and was famous for his success as editor of the Richmond Enquirer, and publisher John P. Heiss.
