    Description

[Martin Luther King Jr.]. Typescript: How My Mind Has Changed in the Last Decade. Nine pages, 8.5" x 11", circa 1959. Printed on onionskin paper, Dr. King begins by stating that ten years earlier he was in his senior year in theological seminary when he began to question what he calls liberal theology and the ideas about the inherent goodness of man. He began to discover the philosophies of Kierkegaard and Nietzsche, Jaspers, Heideggar, and Satre, all thinkers in the field of existentialism. During this time he also became interested in social ethics as it related to racial and economic injustices. In the 1950s he acquainted himself with Gandhian principles of non-violent resistance which he put into practice throughout his involvement with the Civil Rights Movement. He discusses his trip to India in 1959 and its reinforcement of his beliefs in social change through non-violence. A fascinating first-hand account. Areas of light toning. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
