    [Martin Luther King Jr.]. The Montgomery Improvement Association Desk Calendar for the Year 1959 with Autograph Note by Dr. King on January 22 reminding himself of a speech he was to give to the Council of Churches on Thanksgiving. Encased within a cardboard sleeve. Short notes are scattered throughout with reminders regarding appointments, travel information for Dr. King, messages for telephone calls, speaking engagements, meetings of various committees within MIA and SCLC as well as with international figures, civil rights leaders, religious leaders, et al. Entries of note include:

    March 10 - "Mrs. P. B. Washington of Johnson Publishing will be here for four days."
    March 26 - "Meet with Sheriff on Edward Davis." Six months earlier Edward Davis stood trial for assaulting Ralph D. Abernathy, whom he accused of having an affair with his wife.
    April 1 - "Meet with Dr. Reddick." Lawrence D. Reddick was a professor of history at Alabama State College and the first biographer of Dr. King.
    April 2 - "SCLC Administrative Committee meeting."
    April 7 - "May 11, 1959, accept invitation. Please send additional details, etc. Vice-President Nixon's Committee."
    April 25 - "Pick up ticket for Dr. King."
    May 13 - "SCLC Meeting in Tallahassee, Florida."
    August 31 - "Have Bayard look into a concert that [Harry] Belafonte is interested in giving for us immediately. The article seems okay. Get it to Liberation immediately."
    November 27 - "Remind Dr. King about sermons to be returned."
    December 18 - "Jan. 5 or 7 to see Senator Kennedy."

    Also contained are several notes in shorthand by Maude Ballou, a friend of the Kings and personal secretary to Dr. King during his time in at MIA. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
