Description
[Martin Luther King Jr.]. Group of Seven International Letters. The Civil Rights Movement in the United States propelled Dr. King to recognition on the international stage. Included in this fine collection are letters from admirers in India, France, and Germany. Of note is a letter from "students of English and American languages and literatures" at Humboldt University [December 7, 1956], who write, in part: "We heartily congratulate you to the anniversary of your bus-strike. We have heard about this movement . . . in a lecture dealing with the race-problem in the U.S. We . . . are highly interested in this question and we hope to get from you some further intelligence . . . We deeply sympathize with you."Also included is a letter from Rajkumari Amrit Kaur who writes to Dr. King's personal secretary, Maude Ballou, in full: "Will you please tell D. Martin Luther King how sorry I am not to have had the pleasure of meeting him. I do hope he is making a good[?] recovery. Give him my regards & best wishes." Two months earlier, Dr. King was stabbed in the chest with a letter opener at a book signing in Harlem. Kaur (1889-1964) was the daughter of an Indian prince who became a politician and social activist and participated in the Indian freedom movement after a meeting with Mohandas Gandhi, with whom she served as a secretary for sixteen years. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.
