[Martin Luther King Jr.]. Final Page of the Speech "Facing the Challenge of a New Age" with Original Transmittal Note Dated Two Months Before Dr. King's Death. One printed page, 8.5" x 11", containing the last five lines of a well-known speech presented at Holt Street Baptist Church during the first annual Institute on Nonviolence and Social Change on December 3, 1956 (during the final weeks of the Montgomery Bus Boycott). The page was sent to Maude Ballou, Dr. King's friend and personal secretary, from Lillie Hunter on January 31, 1968, just over two months before King was assassinated in Memphis.

Lillie was hired as secretary of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church by Dr. King in 1954. When King and his family moved to Atlanta in 1960, Ms. Hunter followed and worked as the bookkeeper for the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and as secretary to Ralph Abernathy until her departure in 1970. Here she transmits the final page of the speech to Ms. Ballou with a short note reading, in full: "Maude, am writing you. Thought you would like to have this. Take care of you and Lennie and the 'babies.' Looking for Joyce's photo. Love Lillie."

The page is lightly toned around the edges with two sets of staple holes along the left edge. Some of the text is lightly smudged from the printing process, but still wholly legible. From the Maude Ballou Civil Rights Papers.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
