[Martin Luther King Jr. Assassination Attempt]. The Montgomery Improvement Association Desk Calendar for the Year 1958. Encased within a cardboard sleeve. Of particular interest is the news of an assassination attempt on Dr. King by a deranged woman while signing his book Stride Toward Freedom in Harlem. In an entry on September 19 [the stabbing actually took place on the 20th]: "Martin stabbed in sternum barely missing heart this afternoon by Isola [Izola] Curry formerly (originally) from." Dr. King survived the stabbing and Curry was placed in an asylum for the criminally insane.

Short notes are scattered throughout with reminders regarding appointments, travel information for Dr. King, messages for telephone calls, speaking engagements, meetings of various committees within MIA and SCLC and meetings with international figures, civil rights leaders, religious leaders, et al. Other entries of note include:

January 13 - "Call Stanley Levinson." Levinson was a close friend of Dr. King and civil rights activist who assisted King on several speeches and events.
January 24 - "Call Finance Committee meeting for 10:00 a.m. Monday." Also includes a short note for "Rev. King Call: Mr. William Peters The man who wrote an article in Redbook Magazine about you."
January 31 - "Pick Rev. King up at 1:08."
February 2 - "Set up conferences for Mr. Luis Alberto Ferreiro with: (1) [Ralph] Abernathy (2) [Robert S.] Graetz (3) Rufus Lewis."
February 4 - Entry recorded in shorthand regarding the SCLC [Southern Christian Leadership Conference].
    March 5 - "Ex. Board M.I.A."
April 9 - "Sermon - 'What is Man' / Lecture 'The Peril of Conformity.'"
May 9 - "Jo-Ann Robinson." Robinson was president of the Women's Political Council and co-organizer of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
May 26 - "Last issue of Echo - Feb. 19." The Dexter Echo was the newsletter of King's Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
June 16 - "Phone Calls: Bayard Rustin, NY / Stanley Levinson, NY."
