    Description

First Appearance of Texas as a Separate Map in an Atlas

[Map]. Thomas G. Bradford. Texas. Removed from Bradford's Comprehensive Atlas, Geographical, Historical & Commercial (it appeared as page 64a), published in Boston and New York in 1835, this is the first appearance of Texas as a separate map in an atlas. Measuring 12.5" x 10", this copper engraved map shows the location of land grants, each of which are outlined by hand. The Nueces River marks the southern border with the states of Tamaulipas and Coahuila. According to Taliaferro, "not all copies of Bradford's atlas contained this map." Scattered foxing. Chipping at the upper edge. Toned along the edges.

Reference: Taliaferro, Cartographic Sources in the Rosenberg Library 248. Phillips, Atlases 770.
