[Map] and [Civil War]. Phelps & Watson's Historical and Military Map of the Border and Southern States. New York: Phelps & Watson, 1864. Measuring 35.5" x 25", this hand-colored foldout map focuses on the southern United States (the Confederate States), all of the Border States, and some of Texas (only East and North Texas are shown). The map is bound in pictorial wrappers, 4.5" x 6.25", showing a Union camp scene with thirty-five pages describing battles, in chronological order beginning with the shelling of Fort Sumter in April 1861 through the shelling of Charleston, South Carolina, on January 20, 1864.

Condition: Text block has come free of the wraps, with a long separation along the spine. Folds have some wear; a few tiny separations and bits of paper loss at fold intersections. Bright color. Wraps have heavy wear, especially at corners.

More Information: The map indicates the locations of rivers, towns, forts, and rail lines. Relief is shown in hachures. Table listing the "Battles of the War" in chronological order at lower right. Battlefields are noted in pink. Populations for states are included (designated with a blue dot) with the inclusion of slave totals in the southern states.
