    1838 Map of Matagorda

[Map]. 1838 Manuscript Map of Matagorda Signed by S. Rhoads Fisher. Untitled map of Matagorda executed in ink and watercolor on two joined sheets of paper, 24" x 38.5", and backed with linen. An early map with great detail showing streets, town lots, and public buildings and spaces. Lots are numbered, and color coded; with larger tracts identified by ownership. At bottom is scripted: "We the undersigned proprietors of the town of Matagorda hereby certify that this is the truth and original Map _ Plat_Survey or chart of the town and town league of Matagorda according to which and the various subdivisions hereon represented. We have mutually partitioned the property among the proprietors, or as a board of proprietors sold, donated, or otherwise disposed of, and that the same was before us when the general schedule of sales donations partitions for appropriations were made out adopted and signed. And as such we sign this each in the presence of the other, and deposit it in the office of the clerk of the county court of the county of Matagorda, in virtue of a resolution passed by the board of proprietors this twenty sixth day of April Eighteen hundred and thirty eight." Signed by S. Rhoads Fisher, Seth Ingram (who signs a second time as President of the Board of Proprietors, D. C. Cady, I.R. Lewis, and Ira Ingram. An additional signature beneath Ira Ingram's is illegible.

A map almost identical in size and style, but dated 1835, sold at Dorothy Sloan Rare Books in 2009 for $10,800. That map had provenance linking it to the estate of William Selkirk, an early settler. No such provenance is present for the map offered here, but similarities in style and execution are unquestionable.

Samuel Rhoads Fisher arrived in Texas in 1830 and settled in Matagorda. He attended the Convention of 1836 representing Matagorda, and was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He served briefly as Sam Houston's Secretary of the Navy, but would be removed a year later after being brought up on charges of abuse of office. He died less than a year after signing this map.

Condition: Map has had extensive restoration, including cleaning and replacement of paper loss, and backed with linen. Some fading to left side of text, and paper loss affecting most signatures. Paper at lower left corner (approximately 2" wide and 8" tall) has been replaced. Mounted with Mylar corners and matted to an overall size of 30" x 43".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
