    Description

    [Lincoln Assassination] George Meade's General Orders No. 15 and Gideon Welles' General Order No. 51. No. 15 is titled "Head-Quarters, Army of the Potomac" and announces the death of President Abraham Lincoln. One printed page, 5" x 8", April 16, 1865. The order reads, in part: "The Major General Commanding announces to the Army that official intelligence has been received of the death, by assassination, of the President of the United States...An honest man, a noble patriot, a sagacious statesman has fallen! No greater loss, at this particular moment, could have befallen our country." Folded in three places with a corner torn and taped. Also in this lot is General Order No. 51, printed on half, 8" x 10" folded, announcing "...with profound sorrow to the officers and men of the Navy and Marine Corps the death of Abraham Lincoln." Vertical fold.
