    [Josiah Gorgas]. Period Fair Copy of a Memorandum to Establish a Confederate Gunpowder Works at Augusta, 1861. Thirty pages, with writing on the recto side only, 8.75" x 11.5", string-bound in a manila folder. Josiah Gorgas (1818-1883) was the Chief of Ordnance for the Confederate States of America. In this document he instructs Major G. W. Rains to establish a powder works in Augusta, Georgia. The powder works still remains and is now a monument to the fallen of the Civil War.

    The title page reads, in full: "Memorandum relative to the establishment of the Gunpowder Works at Augusta and the matter of material under charge of Colonel Geo W Rains Corps of Artillery on Ordnance duty in the year 1861, "62, "63 & 64 - Having Reported for duty to Richmond on the 5th July 1861 I was assigned to special duty by the President in the Ordnance Dept. as will be seen by the following extract - War Department Ordnance Department, Richmond, July 8, 1861 - Major, Having been designated by the President to take charge of the manufacture of Gunpowder, you will at once enter upon your important duties - Having fixed upon a site you will report for the necessary Authority to purchase, In the meantime castings may be ordered and the necessary machinery and fixtures. Your obt. Servant (signed) J Gorgas Major & Chief of Ordnance". The extraordinary document comprises what amounts to a contemporary treatise on the subject of Confederate ordnance and munitions distribution. A thorough document with some toning to pages, a loose page, and some modest chipping to the edges of the manila folder.
