[John Wilkes Booth]: Luther B. Baker ALS and Bonus. Luther Baker was assigned by his brother, Lafayette C. Baker, to head a detail of 26 men of the 16th New York Cavalry (that included Boston Corbett) to pursue John Wilkes Booth and David Herold into Virginia. In the years that followed, Baker, like many others, attempted to cash in on their role in the Lincoln assassination. We offer a very rare ALS, two separate pages, signed on the second page "L. B. Baker", Lansing, Michigan, December 15, 1894, on letterhead inscribed: "Lieut. L. B. Baker, Lecturer. Assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The Flight, Pursuit, Capture, Death and Burial of J. Wilkes Booth, his Assassin." The letter is written to noted Lincoln collector and custodian of the Lincoln Tomb, Herbert Wells Fay. He sends Fay copy image CDV's of Lincoln and Booth. The Booth photo "... was taken from Laura Keene's room the day after the assassination. It was found concealed behind a fancy picture frame on her mantle. You remember she was under arrest a short time as one of Booth's accomplices, but was soon released as no evidence appeared against her... The copy I have I carried with me while in his pursuit, and he was identified by it." He then discusses a copy of a Corbett photo he obtained from one of Corbett's army chums and mentions his desire to obtain photos of Mary and John Surratt. There are two small restored areas on the right side of the first page, neatly repaired broken-off triangular piece in the lower right, repair of partial separation at center fold. The second page has a repaired tear at the bottom and a repair of a complete separation at the center fold. The overall condition is quite nice. Sold together with a "bonus" clipped signature of Lafayette C. Baker, head of the Secret Service Department who supervised the team that hunted down Booth, resulting in his death (signed: "L. C. Baker/ Brig Genl & Chief Natl. Police").
