    [John Steinbeck]. American Academy Arts and Letters Medal and Plaque. The badge consists of a 29mm gold medal, featuring a flying Pegasus encircled by a wreath, suspended from a purple ribbon connected to a gold bar pinback. The reverse of the medal reads, "John E. Steinbeck Elected November 23, 1943", surrounded by the words "American Academy of Arts and Letters." The medal can be detached from the ribbon to be worn as a pin badge.

    Accompanied by an honorary wooden plaque, 9" x 10.75". Presented to Steinbeck, "Nominated for OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT BY INDIVIDUALS IN CULTURAL DOCUMENTARY AND MAGAZINE-TYPE PROGRAMS OR SERIES, 1968-1969 TELEVISION ACADEMY AWARDS." Printed signature by President, Seymour Berns. Steinbeck was awarded for a documentary produced by Lee Mendelson on NBC, which adapted Steinbeck's Travels with Charley for television. The show was first aired on March 17, 1968, just a few months before the author's death.

    Condition: The plaque is in very good condition, with minor wear. The medal is very good, while the ribbon is worn and has some small tears and fraying. Else good.
