[John E. Wool]. Manuscript Biography and Honorary Diploma. This fantastic, handwritten biography is titled "Sketch of the Life o Major-General John E. Wool of the United States Army from April 1812 to Dec: 1863." Containing a total of 168 pages and an appendix filled with newspaper clippings, the sketch was written by the brother of Wool's wife. On the dedication page, the author states: "This sketch founded in contemporaneous information not always official, and now drawn mainly from memory, and therefore claiming no exemption from its ordinary infirmaries." Following the table of contents, which is extensive, the author adds an additional page which reads, in part: "This sketch is not intended nor prepared for publication. In arrangement and topics it may be an [sic] useful index to guide research into the ample materials which General Wool and the War Department possess...If General Wool, himself, could and would find leisure to correct this manuscript, and indicate also the sources for it amplification, it might then perhaps be treated by some competent writer as a nucleus for a full and finished Biography..." Beautifully written with occasional footnotes. In fine condition. Contained within the original box bearing the title on the cover.

Also, a John E. Wool Williams College Honorary Diploma. One partially printed page, on vellum, 19" x 15.5", in Latin, Williamstown [Massachusetts], July 8, 1869, conferring on "...John Ellis Wool, commander in the Federal Army of the Republic, a Doctorate in Law..."Countersigned by the president of the university. Blind embossed seal of the university attached to a purple ribbon at left. Folds with slight age toning, else fine.

General John Ellis Wool (1784-1869) was 77 at the outbreak of the Civil War. He had served in the War of 1812 and the Mexican War and was the oldest general officer to hold a command on either side during the Civil War. He was instrumental in securing Fort Monroe for the Federals early on and it served as the main supply yard for McClellan's Peninsula Campaign.
