[John C. Hays]. Superior Court of San Francisco Judgement Letter Against Hays. 8" x 12.5", San Francisco, July 7, 1853. A final judgement issued against Hays:

"Greetings - Whereas it having been established before us, in our Superior Court of the City of San Francisco, by the pleadings in a certain action in which the People are plaintiff, and John C. Hays, late ex offices, Collector of Taxes for state and county purposes is defendant, that you the said defendant have as such collector of Taxes, collected and now hold in your possession, under protest, the sum of seven thousand one hundred and fifteen ($7115.00) Dollars and that you have refused to pay over the same as the law directs; and judgement having been duly entered and docketed in favor of the plaintiff and against the defendant in said action for said sum. Now therefore, you are hereby commanded to pay over the said sum of seven thousand one hundred and fifteen Dollars to the District Attorney of this District forthwith." Docketing on verso, signed "H.H. Byrne" by Henry H. Byrne, District Attorney, reveals that Hays complied with the court order and turned over the collected taxes on July 9, 1853.
