    The Monroe Doctrine

[James Monroe] Printing of the Monroe Doctrine as it Appears in the National Intelligencer, Vol. XXIV, No. 3526. Thursday, December 4, 1823. Washington: Gales and Seaton. 4 pp. 14.75" x 21". Printed in five columns, subscriber's name ("J Law PM) in ink at top right. The President's address appears in its entirety on page 4. In his speech, delivered two days earlier to Congress, Monroe lays out the principles which would later be known as the "Monroe Doctrine." He states: "The American continents, by the free and independent condition they have assumed and maintained, are henceforth not to be considered as subjects for future colonization by any European powers," and that any such intervention would be deemed a "manifestation of an unfriendly disposition towards the United States." This printing is preceded only by the exceedingly rare "extra" issue published by the same printer two days earlier. Although previously bound, bifolium remains intact. Soft toning and a few foxing spots, otherwise fine.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
