    Description

[J. D. Salinger] 1929 Lehman Club Football Trophy Inscribed to "Sonny" Salinger. The trophy stands about 4" high and measures approximately 3" at its widest point. Stamped "Wallace Bros. Silver Co. V9352" at the bottom of the base. Salinger's childhood nickname was "Sonny", and the author would have been about 10 years old at the time he received this small trophy. Accompanied by a letter of provenance stating Michael Mitchell had received the trophy as a gift from the author. The letter is composed and signed by Mr. Mitchell's widow, Ruth Linke.

Mitchell was the illustrator who designed the dust jacket for Salinger's most famous novel. The Catcher in the Rye. The two men began their friendship as neighbors in Westport, Connecticut. Mitchell, who was already an established illustrator, was the logical choice for Salinger when the time came to pick an artist to design the cover for his first novel. It is likely that the author gave the small trophy to Mitchell during this time.

The trophy has large hole on the back that was caused by a fire that occurred in Mitchell's home. A letter from Salinger to Mitchell dated December 1966 (now part of the Morgan Library Collection) references the fire, and the losses that were sustained.
