    [Indians in the Republic of Texas]. Treasury Warrant Issued to Torr[e]y & Brothers in the amount of "Forty Six 77/100." Partly printed form, 6.25" x 3.75"; Washington; September 21m 1844. Payment is made to the Torreys for "Indian Purposes under control of Executive this amount being for articles furnished for the use of the Indians." John, David, and Thomas Torrey established trading houses at Austin, San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Fredericksburg. Their trading was an important part of President Houston's policy of establishing peace with the Indians. Signed by James B. Shaw as comptroller and endorsed on the verso. From the Robert E.     Condition: Clean and near fine. With a holographic cancellation at center.
