[Goliad Massacre]. Petition Filed Seeking Letter of Administration for the Estate of Andrew Winter. . One page, 8.25" x 12.75"; County of Fayette; February 26, 1838. In part: "The petition of Alfred Morrow and Nancy Morrow, alias Winter, respectfully sheweth that they are domicialated within the jurisdiction of your honor's court; that Andrew Winter died to wit, on or about the sixth of March 1836 within the jurisdiction of this Republic, that he, the said Winter, was one of those volunteer soldiers from the United States of the North who perished with Col Fannin at Goliad - that he died interstate and without a will -" The document gives the date for the fall of the Alamo, not Goliad; and a line of text has been crossed out and corrected. Nancy Morrow was likely Andrew's widow who remarried and emigrated to Texas to claim Andrew's bounty. There is an A. Winter listed in the Texas military rolls serving under Jack Shackleford. Shackleford, a doctor by trade, was at Goliad, but was left alive in order that he may attend to the wounded Mexican troops. Docketed on the verso, giving a filing date of February 26, 1838. From the Robert E. Davis Collection.

Condition: Flattened folds, with tiny pin holes of paper loss where folds intersect. Smoothed creases, with smudged inks in a few areas; toning. "Fannin" is written in pencil at bottom.
