[German Emigration]. Printed German Emigration Certificate. One partially-printed page with integral blank, 8.25" x 13.5", in German and English, Antwerp [Belgium], January 20, 1846, certifying that Joseph Leimüller has received eighty-one gulden (guilder) "as advance for his emigration to Texas." He further agrees that he will refrain from taking full possession of the land granted to him and that he may work off the debt as a laborer at the rate of one gulden per day or one gulden twenty-four kreuzer per day as a craftsman. Signed by Leimüller and his agent from the Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas. Endorsed at the lower edge by the consul of the "Consulate of the Republic of Texas for the port of Antwerp." Very light toning around the edges with areas of chipping at the lower edge.

More Information: The Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas was responsible for the emigration of several thousand Germans. Known as the Mainzer Verein, or more briefly the Adelsverein, the society had its beginning at Wiesbaden in April 1842, when a group of German noblemen met to consider ways and means of purchasing lands in Texas and sending there German emigrants. Two representatives were sent to Texas and, as a result, the society in the fall of 1843 took under consideration a project submitted by Alexander Bourgeois d'Orvanne to acquire a participation in his colonization contract with Texas of June 3, 1842. The society was organized formally at Mainz on March 25, 1844, under the name of Verein zum Schutze deutscher Einwander in Texas (Society for the Protection of German Immigrants in Texas) and on April 7, 1844, the formal agreement with d'Orvanne was closed.
