    Description

[George Washington]. Wallpaper from Washington's Headquarters in Old Lyme, Connecticut. 8.25" x 6". A small section of wallpaper, taken from the wall of the room George Washington slept in at the John McCurdy House in Old Lyme. The McCurdy House served as headquarters for Washington as he made his way from Boston to New York in 1776. It is believed he only spent one night there. The brown and green wallpaper depicts a country road scene on the way to Paris, and upon review appears to be right for the period. The wallpaper is framed and identified on the verso in pencil. Passed down by descent from Arthur B. Calef, an appointee of Abraham Lincoln, to our present consignor. Identification on verso is in the same hand as lot 47236 in this auction, suggesting that it was presented to Calef by the same Mrs. Davis of Old Lyme.

Condition: Light toning and foxing, some paper loss and tears, small spot of dampstaining. Overall very fine.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
