[French and American Treaty of Alliance]. Newspaper: The Continental Journal, and Weekly Advertiser. Four pages, 10" x 16", Boston, December 17, 1778. The majority of the paper is filled with a reprint of the two military and economic treaties between "his Most Christian Majesty, Louis the Sixteenth, King of France and Navarre, and the thirteen United States of America" known as the Treaty of Alliance and the Treaty of Amity and Commerce. With other international news and period ads. Chipped edges and scattered foxing. Separation of the vertical fold has been repaired with tape.

In late 1776, Congress sent Benjamin Franklin, Silas Deane, and Arthur Lee to secure an alliance with France. The French were initially reluctant to sign such a treaty with the rebellious colonies, but word of General Washington's victory at the Battle of Saratoga reached Europe (as did rumors of secret peace negotiations between Franklin and the British) and the French chose to reconsider. Both treaties were signed in Paris on February 6, 1778. On March 17, the British government was informed of the treaties, and it immediately declared war on France. The French sent a squadron of sixteen ships to blockade the British in America, and the British evacuated Philadelphia, consolidating their forces in New York. French naval involvement crippled the British war effort in America over the succeeding years and proved decisive at Yorktown, where the French navy cut off the British retreat and forced the surrender of Cornwallis.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
