    [Fort Sumter]. H. Brown Autograph Letter Signed. Four integral pages, 5" x 8", Grovepoint [Ohio], May 4, 1861, to John Carey, a U.S. Representative from Ohio, in part: "The Bombast & repeated threats of the South had become to them only as the Idle mind, hence when the stern reality came upon they were not prepared to realize their danger & ended had not the attack upon Fort Sumter & its fall have taken place, they would yet have been engaged in [illegible] controversial schemes . . . thank them, to Providence for that event which has aroused the North from their lethargy and united them for the great conflict, and now may it not terminate untill [sic] there is a final and satisfactory settlement of all our difficulties."
