[Fort Scott, Kansas]. Union Captain Robert M. Campbell: Group of Eight Letters. All of the letters, spanning the years 1866 through 1868, are addressed to Capt. Robert M. Campbell, former commander of Co. "F," 47th U.S. Colored Troops. Five of the eight letters are from Dr. Numon N. Horton, who served with Campbell as a surgeon in the 47th USCT during the war and whom he calls "the only regular correspondent I now have left of the officers." Horton has recently moved west to Fort Scott, Kansas, and, in his letters, he continuously urges Campbell to do the same, though he warns that "the West since the war is full of young men seeking fortunes, business and homes." Horton also discusses his newly found female companionship ("I have been quite busy professionally and particularly courting! yes courting.") and the prolonged silence of a mutual friend.

On the final page of one letter, dated March 11, 1867, is found a printed "Description of Fort Scott and Bourbon County," providing the geographical placement of the town, its demographics, and descriptions of the churches, schools, newspapers, railroads, etc. Immediately following is a description of the county itself, with the availability of water, lumber, coal, marble, iron, etc. also described.
