[Doniphan Expedition]. [Friedrich] A. Wislizenus. Memoir of a Tour of Northern Mexico, Connected with Col. Doniphan's Expedition, in 1846 and 1847. Washington: Tippin & Streeper, 1848. 8vo, 141 pages. Appendix. Disbound and sewn. Issued for the Senate for use by the 30th Congress, 1st Session, as "Miscellaneous No. 26." Dr. Wislizenus (1810-1889) recounts his trip from Independence, Missouri, along the Santa Fe Trail with Albert Speyer, merchant and rumored gun runner, unaware that war had been declared between Mexico and the United States. The group was captured and imprisoned for several months. After being released, he joined Colonel Alexander Doniphan and his 1st Regiment of Missouri Mounted Volunteers as a surgeon on their return to the United States. Moderate to heavy foxing.

Included are two lithograph maps and one profile: The first, titled Profile of Elevations Above the Level of the Sea, 22.5" x 16", showing three graphs representing elevations on the route from Independence, Missouri, to Santa Fe; Santa Fe to Chihuahua; and Chihuahua to Reynosa on the Rio Grande. There is a small .75" tear at the left edge. Edges are toned and spots of foxing are seen. The second, titled Geological Sketch, measures 11.5" x 13.75", showing the route taken by the expedition through Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico. Scattered spots of foxing. The third, titled Map of a Tour from Independence to Santa Fe, Chihuahua, Monterey, and Matamoras by A. Wislizenus, in 1846 and 1847, measures 18" x 22.75", indicating roads, settlements and towns, and the route taken by the expedition. Lightly foxed. "The first is a map of considerable value . . . a number of routes to New Mexico and across Texas are shown, and Doniphan's campaign is carefully followed from Independence, through New and Old Mexico to the camp of June 2nd, 1847 . . . near the mouth of the Rio Grande."
