    Description

[Declaration of Independence]. The Gentleman's Magazine, August 1776. London: D. Henry, August 1776. Octavo. 5" x 8.5". [337] - 387 pages. One of the earliest British printings of the Declaration of Independence, which can be found on pages 361 and 362. The publication reported closely on the growing unrest in America and this edition also includes articles on parliamentary debates and a discussion on "Proceedings of the American Colonists," which refers to the Declaration as a "desperate measure." It reads in part: "In the preceding part of this Magazine the reader will find the Declaration of Independency issued by the American Congress, with a recapitulation of the grievances which have forced them into that desperate measure. Whether those grievances were real or imaginary, or whether they did or did not deserve a parliamentary enquiry, we will not presume to decide. The ball is now struck, and time can show where it will rest." A COA from Timothy Hughes Rare & Early Newspapers accompanies the lot.

Condition: Dried adhesive residue to spine. Lightly toned and worn throughout.
