    Description

[De Leon's Colony]. Document Purporting to Contain Original Titles to Town Lots in Victoria. One page with separate blank, 7.5" x 12.5", [Victoria], June 6, 1840. De Leon's Colony was established in 1824 and remains the only predominantly Mexican colony in Texas history. This fascinating fair copy gives a list of names and lot numbers of some of the original inhabitants of the town of Victoria. Above the list is written: "The following is said by Mr. John J. Linn to be a list of lots belonging to Mexicans but for which there is not shown as yet any evidence of title." John Joseph Linn (1798-1885) settled in De Leon's Colony in 1829, took part in the Texas Revolution, held the post of quartermaster of the Texas army, and served in the second and third congresses of the Republic of Texas.

What follows is a list of fifty-four names followed by lot and section numbers. Among those listed are members of the De Leon family, including two entries for "M .DeLeon," John J. Linn, and Placido Benavides, the "Paul Revere of Texas." A note at the end of the list reads, "Mr. Linn takes back the list from which I made this copy I having altered the numbers to suit the present plan of the town." Docketed on the verso of the blank.

Of the many men granted empresario contracts, only Martin De Leon, along with Austin, fulfilled his end by successfully colonizing his grant. Heavily toned with separation along each of the folds, resulting is some minor loss of text. The text is extremely bold and has created a mirrored ghosting from folding.
