"Copy" New Mexico Territory, County of Grant $10,000 Dollar bond for Lawman Harvey H. Whitehill, 1876. Four page partially printed court document 8.50' x 14.50". Know all Men by these presents that Harvey H. Whitehill as principal and Perrin O. Tower, Robert V. Newshaw, William Chamberlin, Johm R Magneder, and David S. Smith as sureties are held and firmly bound unto the Territory of New Mexico and the County of Grant (for the ____ and herefit of the said Territory and County) in the sum of ten Thousand Dollars, lawful money of the United States of America, to be made we bind ourselves - our heirs, executors and administrators severally and jointly firmly by these presents. Sealed with our seals and dated the first day of May A. D. one thousand eight hundred and seventy six.

Pat Garrett is New Mexico's most famous lawman, but there were others who compare favorably with him in terms of actual deeds. Harvey Whitehill of Silver City is one of them. In an ironic twist, the two men, Garrett and Whitehill, actually faced each other in a political fight for the Ninth Council District (modern-day Senate) seat in 1882, a year after Garrett killed William H. Bonney, (Billy the Kid) at Fort Sumner. Whitehill won. What makes it particularly ironic is that Sheriff Whitehill was the first lawman to arrest "Billy the Kid", and Pat Garrett was the last to arrest Billy.

    Very fine.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
