[Contrabands]. Union General Pleasant A. Hackleman Autograph Letter Signed. Two integral pages, 7.75" x 9.75", [Corinth, Mississippi], August 19, 1862, to General [Alfred Thomas] Davies. At the time of this letter, Hackleman was in command of the 1st Brigade in the 2nd Division of the Army of the Tennessee. Less than two months after writing this letter Hackleman would be mortally wounded in the fighting at Corinth. In this letter General Hackleman responds to an order to detail "twelve contrabands" for hospital duty at Corinth.

It reads, in part: "I received an order yesterday to detail twelve contrabands for the hospitals at Corinth. It is my desire to obey all orders emanating from my superiors if I can...I find from reports this morning that there are twenty-four reported many of whom have been with the regiment for a long time. They are employed as private servants, as cooks, and teamsters and it would be detrimental to the service to have them withdrawn from their present positions as their employment gives the ranks just that many more men to carry muskets. If after being informed of the facts Maj. Gen. Ord deems it advisable to make the detail, I will order it. The contrabands themselves have become used to their present positions...". In excellent condition; legible, and with smoothed folds.
