    Description

    [Confederate P.O.W.]. Copy of "Pilgrim's Progress." New York: American Tract Society, n. y. 18mo, 483 pages. Cloth over boards with blindstamped decorations and titles in gilt on spine. This book belonged to Confederate soldier William H. Jackson who has placed several inscriptions on the front endpapers reading: "Wm. H. Jackson's book/Purchased of Colpr [Corporal] J. M. Burton Febry 27th 1862 at Glo Rt Va." James M. Burton, 24th N. C., was a fellow prisoner at Elmira. A second inscription appears on the front flyleaf reading: "Company G/26th Va. Infantry/Imprisoned in Federal prison at Elmira N.Y." Toned and foxed with dampstaining. Front board and spine covering are separating from the textblock, but still attached to the rear board. Heavy wear to boards.
