[Civil War] Union Soldier Letter from the Siege of Port Hudson. One and one-quarter pages, 8" x 9.75", on blue-lined paper, Port Hudson [Louisiana], July 1, 1863. Written by Charles Buckley in "Camp before Port Hudson" to his friend Charley during the siege of Port Hudson. After the frontal assaults had been repulsed by the Confederate garrison, the Union began the siege on May 27, 1863.

Of the siege he writes: "We are thundering away at the gates of this tough hole yet; these fellows hang on like green death, and submit to all the chances of huge shell droppings in their bed at night..." He continues his account, ending with the following: "This is written under a tree with the flies terrible and plenty and the thermometer less than 120 degrees in the shade."

Three horizontal folds and some chipping of the right edge near the top. Two vertical folds, one of which is breaking slightly. Slight stain toward the left margin. This letter presents a wonderful inside look at a member of a siege army. Fine.
