[Civil War]. Union Officer Samuel Noble King Archive. Comprised of over twenty documents spanning the years 1864 through 1866 including letters, muster rolls, appointments, and ordnance and treasury returns. King enlisted on January 12, 1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Illinois 26th Infantry Regiment. King's large (11.5" x 13") appointment documents - one for 2nd Lieutenant; the other for 1st Lieutenant, are present and signed by Richard Yates, the Governor of Illinois and Commander-in-Chief of the Illinois Militia. King mustered out on October 26, 1864, and the archive contains numerous documents illustrating the full force of Army bureaucracy including several documents from the Treasury and Ordnance departments verifying the return of everything from knapsacks to uniform blouses. Also included is King's letter of resignation due to "Expiration of Term of Service". This document has been endorsed on the verso by Major General Peter Joseph Osterhaus. All examples are in fine condition, with the usual fold creases, and a few examples with splits in the folds.
