[Civil War] Union Naval Blockade Letter with envelope. Three pages, 8" x 10", on blue paper, Key West, July 24, 1862. Written aboard the U. S. Steamer Huntsville, who was a member of the Gulf Blockading Squadron. She has recently captured "2 prizes," one a steamer carrying 250 bales of cotton, "223 being Sea Island Cotton" which was valuable in England.

She had just captured the Confederate blockade runner Reliance, commanded by W. H. Gladding, a former lieutenant in the U. S. Navy. Of him the author says, "he is smart and a great Blockade runner well known to our navy..."

Shortly after the fall of New Orleans, he witnesses an exodus of "people leaving Dixie for more comfortable quarters North."

The author mentions a Confederate shinplaster he has enclosed with the letter which he "got from Secesh." Shinplasters were a form of paper currency representing low denominations and used in places where metal coinage was rare.

Fading along the fold creases is evident; there are small holes at the intersection of the horizontal and vertical creases. An interesting look into activity of the Union navy during the Gulf blockade.

    Estimate: $400 - $600.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
