[Civil War] The Mobile Daily News Newspaper. No. 1, two pages, 9.5" x 12", Mobile, April 13, 1865. Published the day after the capture of the last major Confederate seaport of Mobile, Alabama. The lead story, located in the first column and title "the Surrender of Mobile," details the surrender of the city. It begins as follows: "The official and unconditional surrender of the city of Mobile to Major General Gordon Granger commanding the United States land forces, and Admiral Thacher, of the United States Navy, transpired yesterday afternoon."

Also of note in column two is the article titled "Important News from Lee's Army." It reads in its entirety:

"Dispatches from Washington state that a great battle has been fought between the combined armies of Gens. Sheridan and Sherman and Gen. Lee, in which the former had captured [a small hole obscures the number]0,000 prisoners, driving Gen. Lee's army into such a position that he must surrender, and probably has done so ere this. Gen. Grant's army being close upon him, he must succumb to these three great armies.
This news is official, and is published in detail, but at such length that we are unable to five it in full

The paper is very thin with heavy chipping along the edges. There are a few tears at the right edge that does not obscure the text. There are some ink stains and foxing, but still in very good condition. This edition was collected by Capt. Charles A. Holmes of the 29th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment, along with the 8th Illinois, to enter the city after its surrender. This is a fascinating piece of history from the last days of the war.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
