    Description

[Civil War]. "Terms of Capitulation" Handbill. One printed page, 5.25" x 12", Meridian [Mississippi], May 6, 1865. Confederate General Richard Taylor (1826-1879) commanded the last remaining Confederate force of any size east of the Mississippi following the surrender of Generals Robert E. Lee and Joseph E. Johnston in April 1865. With the Mississippi River impassable, Taylor states that his "duty, as Departmental Commander, was to stop the further loss of life and devastation of States already impoverished by war; and . . . make such terms for my troops as would preserve their honor, and best protect them . . . from the further ravages of war."

Here is printed the terms of Taylor's surrender to Union General Edward R. Canby, General Order, No. 54, in part: "The troops will turn in their arms to their own ordnance officers. They are to be paroled by commissioners selected for that purpose. They are to be subjected to no humiliation or degradation. Both officers and enlisted men are to retain their private horses. Troops will preserve their present organizations, officers remaining with their commands, until paroled and sent home in a body. They will have transportation and subsistence to their homes furnished at public expense." In addition, arms and property of the Confederate government are to be turned over to the United States and paroled men and officers are allowed to return home unmolested and may keep their side arms and horses. Signed in print by both Taylor and Canby. Folds. Overall toning with scattered spots of foxing. Damage to the upper left corner has left some minor loss of paper.

The official surrender took place on May 8, 1865, and Gen. Taylor was paroled three days later.
