    [Civil War]. Soldier's Letter Regarding Lee's Surrender and the Death of Lincoln. Four integral pages, 5" x 8", "Battery B 1st N J Art.," April 18, 1865, to Ralph Van Houter. He asks about Lee: "I suppose by this time you have heared [sic] all about Genl. Lees surrender a great deal more than I can tell you, but I can tell you we never had such a short and severe campaign since I have been a soldier." He expects to leaves soon as, "I don't think we will have any more fighting for there is enough now with [William T.] Sherman to drive Johnson [Joseph E. Johnston] off the face of the Globe. every thing has gone well excepting the loss of our beloved President. Peace be with his soul he has been a Father to us all the soldiers all regret his loss very deeply... God must have some all wise purpose for taking him away from us now and when we need him most..." With original transmittal envelope. Ink is faded, but legible.
