    [Civil War]. Robert Burns Group Including Book of Poems, Hardee's "Tactics," and Two Carte de Visites. Included in this group is Burns' personal copy of Dr. James Currie's "The Complete Poetical Works of Robert Burns." New York: D. Appleton & Co., 1857. 18mo, 612 pages. This beautiful edition is bound in leather over boards with blind- and giltstamped decoration and titles. Page edges also in gilt. Inscribed on the front flyleaf, "Robert Burns/from E.D.W./Xmas 1859 Detroit," Burns' has placed a similar inscription on the following page, "R. Buns-/from/E.D.W./Decr. 25th 1859." Whether Major Burns was related to the Scottish poet of the same name is unknown. Light shelfwear. Binding is tight.

    With Burns' copy of W. J. Hardee's "Rifle and Light Infantry Tactics." Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott & Co., 1861. In two volumes. 32mo, 250; 232 pages. Illustrated. Burns has placed his ownership signature on the front free endpapers of both volumes: "Robert Burns/Detroit. April 1861." Spine of both copies are worn and cracked in places. Pages show only light toning. [and:] Two Carte de Visites. The first, a 2.5" x 4" chest up portrait of a bearded Burns in uniform, with "G. Grelling, Artist, Detroit, Mich." backstamp. The second features an unidentified woman, presumably his wife, in a 2.5" x 4.25"shoulder up portrait with J. Gurney & Son of New York backstamp.

    Robert Burns enlisted as a first lieutenant in Company "C," 4th Michigan Cavalry in August 1862. Four months later he was made adjutant on the staff of Col. R. Minty, 1st Cavalry Brigade, Army of the Cumberland and remained in that position throughout the war, attaining the rank of captain the following March and major on December 11, 1864. He participated in several battles including the Battles of Franklin and Shelbyville. Breveted a Lieutenant Colonel in April 1865, he mustered out of service three months later.
