[Civil War]. Julian E. Bryant Grouping. Included in this collection is a small stencil, made of nickel silver or German silver, still bearing paint marks, which incorrectly reads: "J. W. Bryant/Colonel/46th U.S.C.I." Also, the 1861 copy, volumes two and three only, of General Winfield Scott's seminal work, Infantry Tactics. Two small, 32mo copies illustrated with diagrams and maps. Well worn and foxed throughout. In 1835, Scott's work was adopted for use by the United States army. With an 1862 diary used for recording financial records and a small, leather portfolio stamped in gilt: "U.S. Currency,", "Cards," and "R.R. Ticket."

Julian Bryant enlisted as a second lieutenant in the 33rd Illinois Infantry on September 18, 1861. He was discharged out of his regiment in June 1863 and was promptly mustered into the 51st Infantry, U.S. Colored Troops, and served with them until September of the following year when he was transferred to the staff of the 46th Infantry, U.S.C.T. Bryant was promoted to colonel and survived the war, but sadly drowned in the Gulf of Mexico on May 14, 1865.
