    [Civil War]. John MaGuire Autograph Death Notice Signed informing a wife of her husband's death. Two pages, 7.5" x 9.75", "Head Quarters 2d Regt N. Y. Vols/Camp Butler," Newport News [Virginia], October 17, 1861. He begins: "It becomes my painful duty to notify you that your husband, private James H. Hendery...Died on the evening of the 15th after an illness of Eight days of Inflamation [sic] of the Bowels." A touching letter which has detached into three neat pieces, affecting some of the text which remains entirely legible. Minor staining at the top and bottom edge and uneven toning.

    More Information:

    He was transferred to the hospital at Fort Monroe, "but like diseases of this character he commenced rapidly to Sink_ and died_ with a blessing for his wife." After hearing the news, the company proceeded to Fort Monroe and attended the funeral where he was buried in the military burial ground. "I would were it deemed advisable have sent the remains to Troy [New York], but the state of the Weather and the rapid Decomposition of the corpse will not permit it at present."
