[Civil War]. Ellsworth Regiment Recruitment Broadside. One printed page, 13.5" x 19.75", Plattsburgh [New York], August 29, 1862, calling for recruits "...for the Ellsworth 44th [New York] Regiment...Now in the field, Col. J. C. Rice, Commanding." Each new recruit was paid a bounty of $217.00, which included a one month's advance pay of $13. Of the 44th New York, the broadside claims they have "...won glory on three of the hardest fought battle-fields of the War. Its name will be forever associated with the names of Hanover Court House, Gaines' Mills and Malvern Hill...But in the discharge of their duties, their ranks have been thined [sic]...From 600 to 700 of the tried men of the Regiment remain for service. They want from 300 to 400 gallant companions to fill up their ranks...they offer a brother's welcome to such as come forward promptly to share their Trials and their Glory." Professionally restored, adding paper all along the left edge and mending of small tears. Overall toning. Chipped right edge. Light staining at the lower right corner.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
