    [Civil War Dead]. Ledger of Activity Kept by F.N. Field. The entries are undated, but date shortly after the end of hostilities. Comprising eighty-three pages of information from famous areas, twenty-two in all, such as Shiloh, Corinth, Bethel, Vicksburg, et al. At the beginning, Field has written a "Memorandum for guidance in exploring for Graves," which lists eight suggestions for information which should be (and mostly are) contained within, in full: "Location of graves, giving direction and distance from some known and prominent point or object; Number of graves, marked and unmarked separately; Condition of graves and character of location whether in open fields or Woods on high or low ground, and whether enclosed or not; Names of the owners of the land with its value and the name or names of some of the nearest residents; List of the inscriptions on head-boards, except in case of large Cemeteries of which there are official Records; Name of persons to be referred to for further information, Citizen or Ex-Military; In the neighborhood of Hospital the name or names of Surgeons or others who have been in charge; At Posts or public Cemeteries the name of persons in charge of making interments. Sextons. Undertakers or Officers.; Any information and statement of facts and incidents procurred [sic] from people in the neighborhood; Suggestions in regard to proper places to locate permanent Cemeteries; Statements in regard to Confederate graves found in the same neighborhood with Union dead, their estimated numbers, and condition generally." Packed with information from around the states of Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi and fully indexed at the front. Located within a 4.5" x 7" leather notebook which is worn, the front board and the first fourteen pages of which are detached.
