[Civil War]. Confederate Soldier T. R. Martin's Letter. Two pages, 6' x 8.5", Gordonsville [Virginia], May 7, 1863, to his father. Gordonsville was a major stop for the railroad connecting the Shenandoah Valley and Richmond. Martin writes, in part: "There have been very stiring [sic] times here in the last few days but I have been unable to take any part in the fighting on acount [sic] of my horse...The Yankees came to Trevillions saturday morning & I left about the same time...& came back to the depot. The Feds having left & I came up to Gordonsville Tuesday evening. The Feds came back to the depot the same evening & destroyed all our company bagage [sic] & took two of the Co prisoners & I expect our Captain as he was there & hasn't been heard from since...Five of our Co on Saturday held the Yankees in check at Trevillions for 4 hours & charged them 3 times & Tuesday a scouting party went out & yesterday brought in 7 prisoners." A fantastic look at the everyday occurrences a soldier experienced during the war. Toned folds with light waterstaining.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
