    Description

[Civil War]. Confederate Autograph Album. Belonging to Maggie E. Williams, the album is filled with poetry and signed by several Confederate soldiers such as Edgar Skinner, a member of Early's Division, Army of Northern Virginia; C. H. Cawood, a member of the signal corps and POW; S. S. Higginbotham, 29th Virginia Regiment; J. S. Faulkner, 7th Louisiana; H. H. Dickenson, captain in the 29th Virginia Regiment; Francis J. Herron, Cobb's Georgia Legion; et al.

Of note is a confession of love attributed to "Stonewall Jackson," though the true author is unknown, dated October 22, 1862, reading: "Oh adorable Miss Monkey had I but words sufficiently strong to express the admiration of your beauty. You would at once believe me your devoted lover and complete my bliss by flying to my arms. Who must without the possession of that angelic form pine away and die. Then come my dearest Miss Monkey come fly to my arms and let me embrace you for you will ever find in me a constant and attached lover."

On the penultimate page is found an inscription from Francis T. Nicholls, reading: "Believe me Miss Maggie that at all times & in all places I shall always holdin most grateful remembrance the very many acts of kindness with which you treated a wounded soldier. a perfect stranger to you & whose only claim was that he was a 'Confederate.'" Nicholls, a brigadier general in the Confederate army, was severely wounded at the Battle of Chancellorsville when a shell removed his left foot. Unable to further served in the field, he spent the remainder of the war in the Trans-Mississippi Department overseeing the Volunteer and Conscript Bureau. A second inscription by Nicholls is found below the first, written in French, and reads: "A sigh is often a memory."

Illustrated with four quaint, hand-colored plates and filled with multicolored paper. The album itself is well worn, the front board, front free endpaper, and a portion of the spine covering having separated from the textblock.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
