[Civil War]. Chauncey L. Rumrill Lot of Eight Autograph Letters Signed. Corporal Chauncey L. Rumrill, a member of the 81st New York Infantry, is here writing to friends and family keeping them up to date on the movements of his regiment between the months March, 1862, and January, 1863. Beginning with a move to Washington D. C., he gives mundane details of camp life such as drilling, rations, the politics within the regiment, etc., but he also conveys the overall sentiment of the Union army following a difficult year and a series of defeats. In a letter dated July 13, he mentions the arrival of General George B. McClellan to their camp, not long since his removal as commander in chief. He writes: "General McClellan visited our camp the 4th. Not one single man opened his head to cheer him. Every one of us would sooner have charged bayonets on him." These wonderful letters provide an intimate look at the everyday life of a soldier in the Federal Army in the first years of the war.
